Outlaw Russell in Sanctuary

OUTLAW RUSSELL’S STORY

Outlaw Russell is a fierce wild horse who saved his own life. This handsome bay roan was stolen along with other horses and loaded onto a trailer bound for Mexico, where all were to be sold for slaughter. When the truck broke down and the horses were being loaded onto another trailer, Outlaw broke free and ran. While much of his story is a mystery, he was rescued and brought to Four Corners Equine Rescue in northwest New Mexico. The other horses were also saved.

For over a year, the amazing and talented staff at Four Corners tried to gain Outlaw’s trust and show him that some humans are worthy. This deeply traumatized mustang was unable to settle and become adoptable, despite patient, caring effort. Sky Mountain Wild was happy to offer Outlaw sanctuary where he would roam free for the rest of his life with the human contact of his choosing. He arrived with He Who Runs, another vulnerable mustang needing refuge, to the Sanctuary in early fall of 2025.

For some time, the Sanctuary Team caught only glimpses of Outlaw and He Who Runs from afar as they would bolt at the sight of humans. As days turned into months, the pair began to stand still from a distance and watch warily as Sanctuary Team members moved slowly by. Then one day, a beautiful surprise ~ Outlaw and He Who Runs had joined up with the rest of the Sky Band of Mustangs in sanctuary. They now allow themselves to be seen at the outer edge of the band. Life, freedom, choice ~ this is the gift that sanctuary offers mustangs like Outlaw.

You can help Outlaw Russell . . . by choosing him.

*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
