He Who Runs in Sanctuary

HE WHO RUNS’ STORY

He Who Runs arrived at Sky Mountain Wild in early fall 2025. This curious young bay mustang with the wild mane and tail stood alone in a holding facility corral while potential adopters passed him by. He Who Runs lost his family band and land to roam when he was rounded up from his home range. His small stature made him unadoptable in the eyes of humans who want to use horses only for their own aims.

Our kind and skilled veterinarian traveled the 6 hour round trip to castrate He Who Runs before he came into sanctuary with Sky Mountain Wild. The Sanctuary is a non-breeding refuge. This means that we may take in as many vulnerable mustangs as sanctuary lands can hold while keeping mustangs, other wildlife, and sanctuary lands healthy and thriving. He Who Runs arrived with Outlaw on a beautiful early fall evening. He shot off the trailer and galloped away, finally able to stretch his legs after months standing in a small holding corral.

For some time, the Sanctuary Team caught only glimpses of He Who Runs and Outlaw from afar as they would bolt at the sight of humans. He Who Runs earned his name from Dawne’ndine’, a wonderful Colgate University student who visited the Sanctuary for classes the previous year. He Who Runs and Outlaw were inseparable and off on their own until the day, months after arrival, that they joined the Sky Band of Mustangs. Over time, He Who Runs has shown his curious nature, slowly moving in closer to humans. This the power of sanctuary in action ~ life, freedom, and roaming with a family band of his own.

You can help He Who Runs . . . by choosing him.

*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
