Jesus Maes, Landowner
Jesus and his family have ranched on northern New Mexico lands for over 100 hundred years, and have welcomed the Sky band to the cool mountain air and meadow of wildflowers on their beautiful land. Together, Jesus and the sanctuary have created a refuge for mustangs and the elk, deer, bear, coyotes, and all wildlife who share his family land.
Karen Herman, Ph.D., Co-founder & Director
Karen brings a deep love of children, wild life, and the wild to the sanctuary, along with experience as a researcher, author, clinician, and administrator in the public and private sectors. She is fascinated with science and making it come alive on the range for wildlife and land. Most importantly, she has learned how to fix fence.
Ida Sue Gonzales & Roderick Lujan, Landowners
Ida Sue and Roderick’s family have ranched in the Sabinoso area for generations, and they have now welcomed the Sky Band of Mustangs to the red rock mesas and knee-high summer grasses on their gorgeous land. Together, Ida Sue, Roderick, and the sanctuary are expanding to offer refuge for more mustangs while keeping them and land healthy.
Justin Marquez, Farrier & Immunocontraception
Justin is a life-long horseman, farrier, and expert marksman with a dart gun. Justin’s care for and talent with all things horses make him the person for skilled help for mustangs with special hoof needs. Justin is the lead on immunocontraception for the sanctuary’s PZP projects.
Lisa Meyer, Communications
Lisa is a paper artist whose designs inspire and bring joy. Her talents with technology coupled with her creativity and analytical abilities support sanctuary operations. Lisa is the lead for sanctuary communications.
